The Complete Upper Lobe Piercing Guide

✓ We offer this piercing

Upper lobe sits above the standard lobe hole — popular for stacked lobe looks and curated ears. Spacing from your first lobe hole matters if you plan a full constellation later. I pierce this placement by appointment at 2375 E. Tropicana Suite 3 — book online or call (725) 224-1240.

Anatomy requirements

  • I assess upper lobe anatomy before marking — tissue depth, angle, and lifestyle (sleep, headphones, helmets).
  • I decline when anatomy cannot support a safe 90-degree piercing — not every trend placement fits every body.

Who is NOT a candidate

  • Active outer-ear infection — see a clinician first, pierce after it clears.
  • Unrealistic timeline for multiple cartilage piercings on the same ear in one trip.

Who it's good for

  • First-time piercees wanting low pain and predictable heal.
  • Clients planning stacked lobes or a curated ear who can attend a downsizing check.

Pain level

3/10

Similar to standard lobe — quick pinch

Healing timeline

8–10 weeks; wait 3 months before heavy hoops

Saline cleaning, downsizing on schedule, desert-climate awareness. Las Vegas is dry — your crusties will feel tighter than in humid climates. Do not pick them; let saline do the work.

Jewelry sizing

  • Starter length accounts for swelling — implant-grade titanium flat-back or bar sized at consult.
  • Gauge and length are chosen for your anatomy, not copied from a photo on Pinterest.

Downsizing

  • Downsize post length at 8–10 weeks if swelling is gone — shorter jewelry prevents angle irritation.
  • Stacked lobes need spacing planned before shortening ends.

Swelling expectations

  • Mild swelling day 1–3 is normal; a long flat-back post accounts for it.
  • If the post embeds or skin swells over the backing, come in — do not wait.

Sleeping

  • Sleep on the opposite side for the first two weeks — pillow pressure on a fresh upper lobe is the fastest route to a bump.
  • A travel pillow with a ear hole helps if you are a side sleeper.

Exercise

  • Light gym is usually fine after the first few days if you rinse with saline after sweat.
  • Avoid contact sports, grappling, and anything that snags fresh jewelry.

Migration

  • True migration is rare on lobes with correct angle — crooked gun piercings are the usual cause.
  • If the hole looks oval instead of round, book a consult before it worsens.

Rejection

  • Lobe rejection is uncommon with needle technique and implant-grade jewelry.
  • Red flags: thinning skin at the exit, jewelry hanging lower over weeks.

Keloids vs irritation bumps

  • Irritation bumps: fluid-filled, tied to pressure, long jewelry, or sleeping — usually fixable with downsizing and saline.
  • Keloids: raised scar tissue that grows beyond the piercing, often genetic — see a dermatologist; do not self-diagnose online.
  • If a bump grows for two weeks after fixing sleep and jewelry, book a check-in — do not stack home remedies.

Desert climate — Las Vegas

  • Vegas air is dry — crusties tighten faster than at the coast. Saline mist, not picking.
  • Skip hotel pools, day-club hot tubs, and dusty outdoor festivals until your piercer clears you.
  • SPF on healed piercings only; never on fresh work. Sweat from summer gym sessions — rinse with saline after.

Katelyn's Piercing Notes — what I tell clients about Upper Lobe

  • I use sterile needle technique and implant-grade starter jewelry for every upper lobe.
  • I schedule a downsizing check around 6–8 weeks when swelling is gone — shorter posts prevent angle irritation.
  • Saline mist — no twisting the jewelry during heal.
  • I mark upper lobe piercings standing and sitting — your anatomy shifts.
  • Plan spacing now if you want a curated ear later.
  • Implant-grade titanium or 316L steel only for fresh work — gold upgrades after heal.

Cleaning

  • Sterile saline mist 1–2 times daily — spray, let it sit 30 seconds, pat dry with clean paper towel.
  • No alcohol, peroxide, or tea tree oil unless I tell you otherwise in a check-in.
  • Wash hands before touching anywhere near the piercing.

Swimming

  • No pools, hot tubs, or open water until your piercer clears you — chlorine and bacteria both set you back.
  • Lake Mead and hotel pools are everywhere in Vegas; plan heal before pool season.
  • Lobes: usually 8+ weeks before swimming in Vegas pools.

Common mistakes

  • Twisting the stud — that micro-tears the fistula every time.
  • Butterfly backs that trap hair, sweat, and bacteria.
  • Swimming in Vegas pools before the fistula closes.

When to contact your piercer

  • Spreading redness, pus, red streaks, fever, or pain that worsens after day 3.
  • Jewelry embedding, sudden asymmetry, or a bump that grows for two weeks straight.

Placement quirks

  • Upper Lobe has placement-specific quirks — see sleeping, migration, and desert sections below.
  • Anatomy-first marking — I decline when tissue cannot support a safe angle.
